Overview:
A classic heirloom known for its high yields, drought tolerance, and versatility in making cornmeal, flour, animal feed, and silage. Grows to 8-12 feet and produces 9 inch ears.
Sowing:
Direct sow outdoors after the danger of all frost has passed and when soil temperatures reach a consistent 65°F. Choose a full sun location with well draining soil rich in organic matter. Because wind is air pollinated, plant in blocks rather then rows to ensure good pollination and full ears.
Germination: 4-10 days.
Care:
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during germination, tasseling, and ear development. Use mulch to help retain moisture. Weed carefully early on due to shallow roots. Monitor for pests and diseases.
